Before the main event, on the 27th June, the Foundation delivered a co-creation workshop to thirty PhD students from Kenya, Uganda and Sudan. Cascade’s Mark Majewsky Anderson talked to the students about how social innovation can be harnessed within universities. He went onto to highlight some of the achievements of international social innovation projects he has led across the world.

The next day, saw presentations from representatives of universities and organisations from across East Africa, as well as the Yunus Chair from Glasgow Caledonian, Prof. Cam Donaldson. Our host, Dr Jonas Yawovi Dzinekou, put together a rich programme exploring how local partners and universities could engage with each other to tackle major local challenges. Speakers included Tommaso Iser Menini from the African Agency for Arid Resources, Daniel Ayebare from the Aye Africa Foundation and Prof. Moses Muhwezi, Acting Principal of Makere University. There was also time for rich discussions with other representatives from Ethiopia, Congo and Togo. The conference culminated in a key note speech from Cascade where it set out its mission and activities, including the Dreamweavers Summer School.
